Ram's performance pickup duo, the RHO and TRX, serve as the high-flying range-toppers in the brand's lineup. The Ram TRX is back for 2027. Pronounced dead at the end of the 2024 model year, Ram has recently been shuffling product plans and reevaluating priorities, and the planets have aligned long enough to allow for the TRX's surprise return. Officially dubbed the Ram 1500 TRX SRT, it packs 777 horsepower courtesy of its big stonkin' supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.
The RHO and TRX have long-travel suspension that soaks up impacts off-road without devolving into a sloppy mess when on asphalt. While it contains a few touches unique to its interior trim, the RHO and TRX's cabins house the same tech and luxurious touches as Ram's other top-spec trucks. The TRX is sold exclusively in a crew cab, short-box body style with room for five inside.
Expert Tip: If you like the idea of a full-size Ram pickup but don't care for the RHO and TRX's off-road attitudes, consider a standard Ram 1500. It's offered in a broad range of trims and price tags.

What's New for 2027?
The TRX did some serious training in hibernation, returning with 777 horsepower, 75 more than the previous version. The suspension is tweaked slightly, too. The TRX gets some of the minor styling updates as the rest of the 1500 lineup, including revised lighting elements, a freshened color palette, and tweaks to the cabin. Additionally, there's a Bloodshot Night Edition with a two-tone color scheme with a hand-painted black upper half and a Flame Red hood stripe. All TRX models also adopt a RAM grille logo outlined in red, and the TRX badge on the tailgate now includes a Tyrannosaurus Rex head. The Ram 1500 RHO carries over to the 2027 without any changes.
C/D Expert Tip:
If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Engines: 540-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 777-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: all-wheel-drive
Under the RHO's hood is a tuned-up version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that's currently offered in the standard Ram 1500. Here, it makes 540 horsepower and comes standard with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Bilstein Blackhawk e2 adaptive shock absorbers and a specially tuned air-spring suspension system give the rear axle up to 14 inches of travel.
The TRX comes with a supercharged Hemi V-8 that displaces the same 6.2 liters and makes 777 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission teams with full-time four-wheel drive, a solid rear axle, and an independent front suspension. It comes with the same adaptive performance shocks as the RHO, which enable the TRX to go from off-road mayhem to on-road comfort without breaking a sweat. When we got behind the wheel of the new 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT we found all of its legend-making capabilities still intact, but amplified slightly by the increased engine output.
What's Your Car Worth?
Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.
0–60-MPH Times
- C/D 60-mph Test: 4.4 seconds (RHO), 3.6 seconds (TRX)
In Comparison: The new TRX is 0.1 second quicker in our testing compared with the previous 702-hp TRX. The RHO is quicker than the six-cylinder version of the Ford F-150 Raptor.
Towing and Payload Capacity
- Max Towing: 8330 pounds (RHO and TRX)
- Max Payload: 1506 pounds (RHO), 1556 pounds (TRX)
The RHO and TRX can't tow as much as the standard Ram 1500, but a 8330-pound maximum capacity is still enough to lug around a speedboat or a decent-size trailer. Maximum payload is 1556 pounds in the TRX and 1506 pounds in the RHO.
In Comparison: If you need to tow more, the F-150 Raptor R is rated for 8700 pounds, but the RHO and TRX edge out the Raptor and Raptor R's 1400-pound payload rating.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- EPA City Rating: 10-14 mpg
- EPA Highway Rating: 14-16 mpg
The RHO's fuel economy is estimated at 14 mpg city, 16 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined. Those might seem low, but they represent an improvement over the V-8-powered TRX, which is rated for only 10 mpg city, 14 mpg highway, and 12 mpg combined.
We haven't yet had the opportunity to subject either version to our 75-mph real-world highway fuel-economy test. However, we did record an 11-mpg average over the RHO's stay with us, which included plenty of off-roading, high-speed highway, and urban travel. For more information about the 1500 RHO's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
In Comparison: The Ram 1500 RHO's fuel economy is within spittin' distance of the Ford F-150 Raptor and its turbo 3.5-liter V-6, which is EPA rated for 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: Front passengers enjoy heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats, a synthetic suede headliner, leather accents on the dash, and carbon fiber trim bits. A leather-wrapped steering wheel extends the leather treatment to the center airbag cover.
Second Row: In the huge rear compartment, passengers share the luxury with heated, ventilated, and reclining seats.
Cargo Capacity: All RHO models come with a five-foot-seven-inch-long cargo bed, and there's a handy integrated step in the bumper to help with climbing up into the bed. With the rear seats stowed, we fit 25 carry-on suitcases inside the 1500's cabin.
Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 14.5-inch touchscreen
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audio System: 19-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo
The standard 19-speaker audio system features 900 watts of power and a 10-inch subwoofer; dual wireless charging pads, a 360-degree view camera, and a head-up display are also standard.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Ram offers basic driver-assistance features as standard on the RHO and TRX, but more advanced tech is available as an option.
- Standard Safety Features: adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Optional Safety Features: evasive steering assist, intersection-collision warning system, 350-degree camera view
For information about the 1500 RHO and TRX's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Ram has a competitive limited warranty that is on par with the rest of the full-size-pickup-truck class. Unlike the Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Sierra, and the Toyota Tundra, the Ram offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance.
- Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary Maintenance: none
