The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Offers Strong Performance and Rich Appointments in a Tidy Package

MSRP
By Drew DorianOverview
Volvo’s XC60 is a compact SUV with a uniquely Scandinavian take on luxury, and the plug-in hybrid model is one of the most fuel-efficient options in the segment. A turbocharged four-cylinder is paired with two electric motors for a total of 455 horsepower, while a 37.9-kWh battery holds enough juice for up to 78 miles of electric-only driving, according to Volvo.
The upscale cabin features the tasteful, minimalist design that the Volvo brand has come to be known for. An 11.2-inch infotainment display and a digital gauge cluster are where most of the XC60’s controls are located, which may irk drivers who prefer more physical controls, but the relative lack of buttons on the dashboard adds to the interior’s clean look.
Expert Tip: If you’d prefer a full-electric luxury SUV, consider Volvo’s EX60, which is similar in size to the XC60 but comes with an electric powertrain and up to 400 miles of driving range per charge.

What's New for 2028?
Volvo has given the XC60 Hybrid a styling refresh for 2028 that includes new wheel designs, a restyled grille and bumper, updated exterior lighting elements, and updated interior color schemes. The T8 hybrid powertrain also sees some updates, most importantly, a larger onboard battery that increases electric-only driving range to up to a claimed 78 miles per charge.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Hybrid Powertrain: turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, 455 hp combined
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: all-wheel-drive
The plug-in-hybrid XC60 T8's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder pairs with an electric motor powering the rear wheels and a starter-generator motor mounted between the eight-speed automatic transmission and the gasoline engine. The latter does double duty, charging the battery and adding torque when needed.
The standard all-wheel drive and firmly compliant suspension provide a well-planted ride that can sometimes be a bit harsh over poor-quality roadways. Steering is precise but devoid of any nuance or feedback. Confidence is the keyword here, not aggression.

Towing and Payload Capacity
- Max Towing: 3500 pounds
3500 seems to be the magic number for luxury hybrid compact SUV towing capability, as the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e hybrid and Lexus RX Hybrid are rated for the same 3500 pounds.
In Comparison: The standard, nonhybrid XC60 is rated to tow the same 3500 pounds as the PHEV version reviewed here.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
- Claimed EV Range: 78 miles
The plug-in hybrid model comes with a 37.9-kWh battery pack Volvo says is good for up to 78 miles of electric driving per charge. Recharging the battery is a time-consuming affair, as the Volvo’s onboard charger isn’t set up for DC fast charging. As such, it requires between five and six hours to refill the battery on a Level 2 charging station.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: Tidy lines and high-quality interior materials add a distinctly Scandinavian flavor that carries over to the front seats with their mid-century sculpting. Both supportive and comfortable, they easily adjust for drivers of all sizes. Dual-zone climate control and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are standard, while a head-up display is available.
Second Row: The second row is reasonably spacious, though the door openings are tight, and the center passenger has limited foot room due to a bump in the floor that intersects with the console. The seatbacks fold in a 60/40 fashion for versatile cargo carrying.
Cargo Capacity: Cargo-hauling capability puts the XC60 mid-pack among its rivals in our testing, with 22 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row or 63 with it folded; with its rear seats down, we fit 20 of our carry-on suitcases.
Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 11.2-inch touchscreen
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audio System: 14-speaker Harmon/Kardon stereo (standard), 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins stereo (optional)
All XC60 models come with an 11.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display with a Google-based software interface. The system provides several personalization options and offers voice controls via an AI voice assistant. We've found the software interface to be quick to respond, but its menus require some familiarization, and some of the icons are small.
A Harmon/Kardon premium stereo is standard, while a Bowers and Wilkins system is available as an option. Wireless charging is accompanied by four USB ports (two each front and rear) and two 12-volt power ports (one front and one in the cargo area).
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the XC60, with driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist standard across the range.
- Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with lane centering

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Relative to its rivals in this segment, the XC60 has an appealing warranty policy. Two years of scheduled maintenance is a convenience that Volvo buyers won't need to pay for separately, either.
- Limited Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
- Hybrid Components: eight years or 100,000 miles
- Complimentary Maintenance: two years or 20,000 miles
