The October full Moon lit up skies around the world this weekend.

Full Moons throughout the year have traditionally been given names that reflect what is going on in nature.

This particular full moon is known by several names, including the Hunter's Moon, a name rooted in historical traditions in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Hunter's Moon is known to sit in the sky for a particularly long time - similar to the preceding Harvest Moon - giving hunters extra light in the skies.

The Moon can take on an orange or reddish hue when it is low in the sky due to the scattering of short wavelength blue light as it passes through a large depth of the atmosphere, as shown here as it rises behind the Basilica of the Madonna dei Martiri in Molfetta, Italy
