Virtua Fighter Crossroads Is a Bold New Step for a Fighting Game Genre Pioneer | IGN Preview

Very few fighting games are as historically important as Virtua Fighter. Street Fighter, of course, is the genre’s proud papa. But Virtua fighter was the first 3D fighting game. It pushed tech forward in incredible ways, and it’s been a pillar of the genre since. It also doesn’t hurt that the series is populated by some absolutely excellent games that have inspired a devoted community and one of the coolest competitive scenes in the space. But Virtua Fighter’s been absent from the scene for a while. Yeah, we got Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. in 2024 and its World Tour last year, but Virtua Fighter 5 itself is 20 years old. With the next game in the series, now titled Virtua Fighter Crossroads, Sega is at something of a…well, you know. What does it mean to be a Virtua Fighter game in 2026? How do you bring the series’ legacy forward while honoring what came before? During Summer Game Fest, I sat down for a presentation and Q&A with producer Riichiro Yamada and head of IP Toshihiro Nakaya to figure out what they thought Virtua Fighter was, and where it was going.

It seems we can't catch a break lately when it comes to PC gaming hardware. All thanks to the global memory shortage, of course. Now, according to information Benchlife claims to have received, Nvidia is raising prices for its GDDR6 as well as GDDR7 GPU kits.

Hideo Kojima sure has been thinking about death a lot lately. Though he's a pretty spritely 62 years old, the Metal Gear and Death Stranding creator has made our pages recently for things like: talking about deciding to make Physint after a brush with death in 2020, making a game where you get old and die, and how he has a USB stick full of ideas that he will one day leave to his staff that is "'kind of like a will".

Entertaining open world satire Future? No Thanks! has been abruptly delayed by Steam content reviewers, due to the presence of multiple seconds of "untextured polygons depicting ass and boobs". Star Wars Zero Company developer Bit Reactor is made up of former XCOM veterans, a series which has a pretty lively modding scene, especially XCOM 2, which supports modding with official development tools. It's even had its fair share of Star Wars mods over the years that completely transport it to a galaxy far, far away. Mod support is one of the reasons XCOM is still holding ground on players' hard drives all these years later.

Everything's on fire, but in a good way

Don't believe the haters about 2025's most divisive strategy game

I've fallen down the Anno 117: Pax Romana rabbit hole this year, despite the negative buzz around it. Steam reviews and the Reddit consensus hold that 117 is empty, dull, and generally just less than its predecessor, Anno 1800. I can sort of see why. Quite a few elements seem like they're waiting for future add-ons to come alive and wake them up. But I've enjoyed myself thoroughly, so when I saw the "mostly negative" reviews for Anno 117's first big DLC, Prophecies of Ash, I figured I'd give it a try, despite the haters. I'm glad I did. An inaugural bit of DLC can't fix every problem. But it solves some pretty big ones, and throws a welcome wrench into the usual flow of city building.

The Video Game History Foundation's latest collection is a deep dive into E3 "like you've never seen it before"

RIP

A queue outside E3 2019.

Ah, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known by many as Summer Game Fes-, wait, sorry, guess I've already moved on! Better known as E3, of course, the first of its kind showcase dedicated entirely to video games that died because it simply couldn't figure out how to live in the modern world (they probably should have asked Geoff). The whole thing ended with much more of a whimper than a bang, but once upon a time it was the place to have your game. And now, the Video Game History Foundation have revealed a new collection all about the event "like you've never seen it before," covering many years worth of a range of materials.
