Water systems are increasingly recognized not only as essential public infrastructure, but also as an important part of climate mitigation, adaptation, and ecosystem management. Water supply, treatment, and wastewater operations can generate greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, CH4, and N2O, through energy consumption and chemical use. Meanwhile, nature-based and emerging water solutions, such as wetlands, mangroves, seagrasses, ocean alkalinity enhancement, algae cultivation, rainwater harvesting, and biological treatment, can improve water quality, store or remove carbon, reduce flood risk, conserve water, and support biodiversity. Their overall value depends on cost, scalability, ecological impacts, carbon storage durability, implementation feasibility, monitoring requirements, and public acceptance.
