Guilty Gear meets Marvel in new fighting game

It's a busy season for Marvel IP. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is breaking box office records, actors like David Jonsson and Ryan Gosling are joining the MCU, and the full Avengers: Doomsday trailer is already being picked apart by fans. That's not even mentioning Marvel Comics, which just announced the lineup of heroes for Maximum X-Men.

Marvel's also at work on the gaming front: Insomniac Games' highly anticipated Marvel's Wolverine is set to be released on September 15, and just got a full story trailer. Before Wolverine launches, though, you can play Marvel's newest release: a fighting game from the makers of Guilty Gear and Double Dragon.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls puts the MCU in the ring

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 2D tag team fighting game. You start off with a single fighter and an assist character, unlocking two more by fulfilling certain conditions. Like in Guilty Gear Strive, a Wall Break will transition the entire match to a new arena, which helps you unlock characters faster. The ultimate 4v4 gameplay allows you to both summon assist characters for special attacks and swap characters in and out of active combat. Unlike other tag-team fighting games, your whole team shares one health bar, which expands as you add more characters.

Marvel Tōkon is set to launch with several modes including Startup Battle, which is supposed to teach players the fundamentals, Battle Arcadia, which appears offer a more party-game-style experience, and Episode Mode, a story mode featuring motion comics, each by a different artist.

At launch, Marvel Tōkon will feature five teams of four characters. Each character comes with an Ease of Use rating, with more stars denoting easier-to-play characters. Ms. Marvel and Wolverine have high Ease of Use ratings, while Storm, whose Tempest mechanic allows players to actively change the trajectory of her projectiles during combat, has a steeper learning curve.

Beyond the 20 base game characters, four DLC characters are planned for Marvel Tōkon's first season. The first wave of DLC, which was announced at San Diego Comic Con, includes the addition of Phoenix Cyclops — an evil, possessed version of the iconic X-Man.

Marvel Tōkon had a divisive open beta last weekend. It received acclaim for its visuals, which blend anime and comic book styles, but a massively glitchy PC port soured many initial impressions. You'll be able to play Marvel Tōkon on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC on Aug. 6.
